Main soundproofing materials and soundproofing schemes for ceilings and floors

Common soundproof materials

Damping soundproof felt

Features: The damping soundproofing felt is very thin, only 1-5 millimeters thick, but weighs 2.4-6 kilograms per square meter. It is very flexible, easy to cut, and convenient to construct. It can provide both sound insulation and vibration reduction, and is effective against both low-frequency and high-frequency noise. A single layer can provide sound insulation of 24-31 decibels. And it is environmentally friendly, flame-retardant, waterproof, moisture-proof, and pollution-free.

Specifications: There are 1.2mm, 2.0mm, and 3.0mm thick rolls, with a width of 1 meter and a length of 5-10 meters per roll.

Scope of application: It can be used in combination with gypsum board for wall or ceiling sound insulation, as well as wrapping pipes and making floor sound insulation pads, such as in home bedrooms KTV、 It can be used in places such as computer rooms.

Ceiling shock absorber

Features: The shock absorber can cut off the "sound bridge" and suppress the transmission of low-frequency vibrations such as footsteps and subwoofers. It is a composite structure of spring and rubber, which can reduce resonance amplitude and achieve a vibration isolation efficiency of over 70%.

Specification: Size 110 × 50 × 50mm, compatible with light steel keel, 2-3 pieces per square meter.

Scope of application: Ceiling sound insulation systems for home theaters, piano rooms, etc, KTV、 Bars and other places with high vibrations, as well as equipment rooms and pipe hangers.

Soundproofing cotton (polyester fiber cotton)

Features: Polyester fiber soundproof cotton is environmentally friendly and non-toxic, with a sound absorption coefficient of 0.75-0.90 (when 50mm thick), and also resistant to mold and moisture. It is light and easy to cut for construction.

Specification: Common size 1200 × 600, thickness 25-50 millimeters.

Scope of application: Wall or ceiling keel filling for residential buildings, conference rooms, etc. Rock wool and glass wool are not as environmentally friendly as polyester cotton, and their skin is prone to itching during construction, but they have good fire resistance (Class A).

Damping soundproof board

Features: High sound insulation, 30-50 decibels, three-layer composite structure, surface layer resistant to damage, and middle closed hole waterproof. Fire rating A, high compressive strength, good weather resistance, and can be used in environments ranging from -40 ℃ to 90 ℃.

Specification: Board size 2440 × 1220 × 14-18mm, the thicker the thickness, the stronger the sound insulation.

Scope of application: KTV, bars, and other walls or ceilings that require high sound insulation, paired with keel and sound-absorbing cotton for better results.

Polymer shock absorber pad

Features: Made of butyl rubber or polyurethane, high specific gravity design improves shock absorption efficiency, heat resistance and aging resistance. By absorbing impact energy through elastic deformation, solid sound transmission such as footsteps and equipment vibration can be blocked.

Scope of application: Isolation of impact sound in building floors, floating structures such as residences and gyms.

Ground shock absorber

Features: It is a spring and damping structure, with steel springs bearing the main load and rubber damping blocks absorbing high-frequency vibrations. Both materials achieve wideband vibration reduction. There is also an adjustable design that can adapt to uneven terrain.

Specification: The individual size is 120 × 120 × 83mm (common speaker shock absorbers), with a load-bearing capacity of 100-500 kilograms per unit.

Scope of application: Places with high acoustic requirements such as recording studios and theaters, as well as precision anti vibration places such as laboratories and medical imaging rooms.

Three common solutions for ceiling sound insulation

Economic plan

Suitable scope: apartment buildings, villas, bedrooms and other spaces.

Sound insulation effect: 30-35 decibels, children's running and jumping sounds are almost inaudible.

Finished decoration thickness: About 12-15 centimeters.

Advanced Solution

Suitable scope: Professional recording studios, private cinemas, etc.

Sound insulation effect: 40-45 decibels, can significantly block low-frequency noise from upstairs.

Finished decoration thickness: About 18-20 centimeters.

Enhanced scheme (special requirements)

Suitable scope: Professional recording studios, KTVs, and other special scenarios.

Sound insulation effect: 45-51 decibels, can significantly block low-frequency noise from upstairs.

Finished decoration thickness: About 25-30 centimeters.

On site display and construction steps

  • Full laying sound insulation felt: Choose environmentally friendly butyl rubber sound insulation felt with a thickness of 2 millimeters or more, with a lap width of over 5 centimeters. It is best to choose one with backing adhesive, fixed with wooden strips and rust proof self tapping screws, with a spacing of less than 15 centimeters, and apply sound insulation sealant at the joints.

  • Installing shock absorbers: Install spring shock absorbers at a spacing of 60 × 60 centimeters and fix them to the floor with expansion bolts, which can cut off the sound bridge and reduce low-frequency noise.

  • Installation of light steel keel: The main keel is clamped into the shock absorber buckle, and the spacing between the secondary keels is 40 centimeters, forming a 600 × 400 mm grid.

  • Filling sound insulation cotton: Select high-density glass wool with a cutting size 2 centimeters larger than the grid, and plug it tightly. The distance between the cotton layer and the floor slab should exceed 2 centimeters.

  • Sealing soundproof board: Preferably 12mm cement fiber board or composite damping soundproof board, staggered splicing, fixed to the keel with self tapping screws, spacing within 20cm, screw head sinking 1mm into the board surface, and board joints sealed with soundproof sealant.

  • Sealing gypsum board: Cover the outer layer with 9.5mm gypsum board, and sew it more than 30cm away from the bottom soundproof board. Apply anti cracking tape to the joint and scrape the joint gypsum.

Economic plan

Suitable scope: Residential, apartment buildings and other spaces.

Sound insulation effect: 20-30 decibels, the sound of falling objects becomes a slight muffled sound.

Finished decoration thickness: About 8-10 centimeters.

Advanced Solution

Suitable scope: High-end apartments, villas, etc.

Sound insulation effect: 30-38 decibels, significantly reducing the sound of objects falling.

Finished decoration thickness: About 10-12 centimeters.
